October is declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and has been since 1989 a set aside time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims.
Domestic violence is unfortunately prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. Physical violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior as part of a much larger, systematic pattern of dominance and control.
Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death. The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime.
Psychologically, a victim of domestic abuse may feel as if all hope is lost, unworthy, and shameful…
Not to mention the often lack of emotional support can lead to heightened fear, anxiety, depression, anger, posttraumatic stress, social withdrawal, the use of illicit drugs, alcohol dependence, and even suicidal ideation. It is clear that the psychological and emotional wounds of domestic violence are devastating.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence and is afraid to report the abuse, please call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text “START” to 88788 to reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline
